Ladder
93 Operations
The
tactical operations of Ladder 93 on the fire-ground are based specifically on 10
tasks that are assigned to them and are considered to be truck or ladder company
assignments.
The tasks are:
|
Search
and Rescue Forcible
Entry Ventilation Laddering Recon Salvage Overhaul Utility
Control Elevated
Master Streams FAST Team
|
The
company very rarely operates elevated master streams, although the proper
equipment is carried if the need should arise.
Members
have a great amount of training in the area of firefighter rescue and
firefighter survival, but are rarely assigned to this duty since the service of
the company are mainly needed to complete other ladder company assignments. As
with elevated master streams, the members and apparatus are equipped to handle
this assignment with great efficiency should the need arise.
To
complete the other 8 tasks, the company uses a system of riding positions. It
has been in place for almost 15 years now, and, with minor changes made over
this time, has worked very well for Ladder Co. 93.
The
system assigns a position to each of the six seats on the apparatus. Each seat
had a placard with the name of the position and the job assignments for the type
of occupancy involved. It also outlines tool assignments for each position.
The
six assignments are further broken into two 3-person teams. Each team operates
as a unit, one covering the building from the inside and one from the outside.
The company officer is in over charge of the company at all times. The system is
designed for the involved occupancy to be aggressively entered, ventilated,
laddered, and searched in the most efficient manner possible.
While
completing these functions members complete the remainder of the truck company
assignments listed above.
The
company also fills certain positions first if a case of limited manpower is
encountered. The system is designed not to break down if a position in the
apparatus is not filled.
The
operating procedure developed by Ladder Company 93 has been forwarded to many
other aggressive truck companies throughout the state, and all have had great
success with it or a system with some minor changes to meet certain needs.
